How to Edit TikTok, Instagram Reels & YouTube Shorts: The 2026 Complete Guide

Short-form video is no longer a trend. It's the entire platform ecosystem now.

If you're not posting on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, you're invisible.

But editing for short-form is completely different from YouTube videos. And most editors don't know the difference.

Why Short-Form Video Is Taking Over

TikTok: 1.5 billion monthly active users Instagram Reels: 1.2 billion monthly active users YouTube Shorts: 1.5 billion monthly active users

For music artists specifically: - 60% of music discovery happens on TikTok - 45% of Gen Z discovers artists through Reels - 40% of YouTube watch time is now Shorts

Translation: If you're not on short-form, your music isn't being discovered.

The Editing Difference

YouTube Video (3-4 minutes, landscape): Intro can be 10-15 seconds, shot holds are 3-5 seconds, one main idea per cut, pacing is deliberate, audio is clean and mixed.

TikTok/Reels (15-60 seconds, vertical): Hook must be 1 second, shots are 0.5-2 seconds, multiple ideas compressed, pacing is frantic, audio is loud and punchy.

It's not just "make it shorter." It's a completely different edit style.

The Golden Rule: Hook in 1 Second

On TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts — you have 1 second before someone scrolls.

Bad hooks: Black screen with text, slow fade-in, "Subscribe" message, artist credit/logo, talking before music drops.

Good hooks: A face (instant connection), something unexpected, beat drops immediately, visual movement/energy, question that makes you curious.

Platform-Specific Editing Rules

TikTok: Vertical format (9:16), 15-60 seconds (sweet spot 21-34 seconds), fast cuts (1-2 second clips), text overlays (larger, high contrast), trending sounds = algorithm boost, captions required (80% watch muted), call-to-action at end.

Instagram Reels: Vertical (9:16) or square (1:1), 15-90 seconds (sweet spot 21-34 seconds), less aggressive than TikTok (2-3 second clips okay), hashtags matter (30 relevant), saves and shares = algorithm signal, music from Instagram library gets boost.

YouTube Shorts: Vertical (9:16), 15-60 seconds max, less chaotic than TikTok/Reels, text overlays work, subscribers see them first, longer hooks okay (2-3 seconds).

The Real Opportunity

Short-form video is where the music industry has moved. 60% of songs that go viral start on TikTok. Artists discovered via Reels get record deals. YouTube Shorts is becoming the number 2 music discovery platform.

If you're an independent artist, short-form video isn't optional. It's how you get discovered.

And that means professional editing.
